About Patricia Beyer

ABOUT PATRICIA BEYER

MY BACKGROUND AND FORMAL EDUCATION

The decision for a parent or family to seek counselling is a sensitive one. At the time you are feeling most vulnerable, you are investing and trusting in the knowledge, wisdom, and skills of someone you do not know.

Thirty seven years ago I began my work with children and families. In this period of time, whether as a teacher or counselor, I came to understand that no one individual can serve all populations. I will always be truthful with you if I believe I am not the best therapist for your needs, and I will do my best to offer referrals that may be a better fit for you.

My practice is geared towards working with children ages four years of age through early adolescence. I hold a Master's Degree in Counseling and Art Therapy from Marylhurst University. I hold a professional counseling license (LPC) with the State of Oregon, and I am a National Certified Counselor (NCC).

Over the years I have counseled children and pre-adolescents with Depression, Anxiety, Attachment Issues, ADHD, Aspergers, Selective Mutism and Expressive Language challenges, Divorce, Loss and Grief, Drug and Alcohol issues within the family, and Family Systems.

My work has always included working with the parents in helping provide education and support in the parenting role. My work with parents and children is collaborative, as I believe this is the most effective and powerful means for developing empathy, compassion, and understanding in the therapeutic process.

My Philosophy and Approach

MY PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH

EVERY CHILD MATTERS. EVERY FAMILY MATTERS.

I believe that children and families are at the heart of a whole and productive society. When a child or family system has become disrupted, it seems that nothing will be right until the child or family regain equilibrium.

We live in exciting yet complicated times. Children, adolescents, and parents can experience setbacks ranging from mild to severe, the result of stressors that exceed their ability to understand or manage.

Anxiety, depression, attachment issues and social/emotional/academic challenges can manifest when coping mechanisms are stretched or depleted. Divorce, illness in the family, or the loss of a loved one may lead to prolonged grieving, a sense of hopelessness, and personal dysfunction.

The origin of the pain may or may not be understood within the family. Sometimes problems have been present for some time, others may appear to have occurred suddenly and without warning. The primary goal of counseling is to seek understanding, create solutions, and help restore balance and well-being through the therapeutic process.

This process is a journey. Sometimes the journey can be short and sometimes long depending on the level of trauma and amount of time the individual has carried the pain. In addition to increasing self-understanding and developing tools and new skills for today, counseling and the therapeutic process is intended to create a healing path towards light and an optimism towards tomorrow.
